Each of these enemies has a unique driving force for their actions, with some of the most detailed backstories going towards central antagonist figures. Mario has amassed quite the rogue gallery over the years, from long-running foes to one-time appearances.

7 Bowser Jr.

Bowser’s Son Who Wants To Steal Peach As A Step-Mother

  • First Appearance:
    Super Mario Sunshine
    (2002)

Bowser Jr. first appeared in Super Mario Sunshine. In the game, Bowser Jr. donned the guise of Shadow Mario in an attempt to ruin Mario’s reputation. This is because his father had told him that Princess Peach was his mother and that she was kidnapped by a bad man named Mario. He hatches a plan at a tropical resort to rescue her and enact his revenge against Mario.

While Jr. does not like Mario in the slightest, he has reluctantly teamed up with him in the past. This took place in Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, where he was unable to quell his father’s rampage on his own.

6 Wario

A Greedy Rival, Envious Of Mario’s Success And Heroism

Wario in Wario Land Shake It

  • First Appearance:
Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins
    (1992)

There have been various Super Mario comics over the life of the franchise, and they have mentioned the past between Mario and Wario. Both Super Mario Adventures and Super Mario-Kun mention how Wario has hated Mario ever since they were both children. This makes Wario someone who has hated Mario longer than any other antagonist in the franchise.

Young Mario would pick on young Wario, and play pranks on him. Mario’s heroics and fame are also something that Wario is gravely envious of. Wario’s first appearance in the franchise was in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, where he acts as the central antagonist of the game, but he has some great spin-off games since.

5 King Boo

Tries To Kidnap Mario Due To His Constant Disruption In The Ghost Mansions

King Boo Looks mario and luigi's mansion

  • First Appearance:
    Luigi’s Mansion
    (2001)

King Boo is a very malevolent foe who enjoys toying with his victims. His hatred is not limited to just Luigi but to both of the Mario Brothers. While King Boo had not appeared in any games prior to Luigi’s Mansion, he harbors negative feelings towards them — indicating off-screen adventures. He kidnaps Mario and traps him in a portrait in an attempt to lure Luigi so that he can do the same to him.

This sends Luigi off on several ghost-hunting escapades in the hopes of saving his brother. In Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, he is far more malicious in nature and shows little regard for his actions’ effects on the world around him. Whilst King Boo has never stated why he hates the Mario brothers, it’s implied that is due to their constant disruption within the ghost mansions.

4 Wart

Someone Who Dreams Of Conquer, Who Has His Plans Foiled By Mario

mario vs wart

  • First Appearance:
    Super Mario Bros. 2
    (1987)

Wart may not be as well known as other entries on this list, but he is a long-running enemy of Mario — dating all the way back to 1988. He has appeared in many other Nintendo properties, such as the Legend of Zelda. Their most noteworthy appearances are from the Game Boy Advance line of Super Mario games, as well as the Super Mario-Kun manga.

Wart is able to use a special machine to make all manner of minions and monsters and finds amusement in the struggles of others as he torments them. However, the more Mario overcomes the hurdles put before him by Wart, the more infuriated he becomes with the Plumber.

3 Bowser

The Ultimate Rival Who Wants To Steal Princess Peach And The Mushroom Kingdom

Bowser and Mario facing off in Super Mario Galaxy

  • First Appearance:
    Super Mario Bros.
    (1985)

Bowser is easily the most recognizable enemy on this list and has been Mario’s primary nemesis since the first Super Mario Bros. game. Bowser kidnapped Princess Peach to make her his wife, but was thwarted by Mario. However, time and time again, Bowser has continued to successfully kidnap the princess throughout the franchise, only to fail at the end of each endeavor.

Bowser has had many powerful allies throughout the various games, such as the Koopalings and Kamak the Magikoopa. He commands vast legions of troops, as well as being an incredibly powerful being himself. This makes him one of the most powerful threats in the Super Mario franchise.

2 Cranky Kong

First Appearance: Donkey Kong (1981)

donkey diddy dixie cranky kong

  • First Appearance:
    Donkey Kong
    (1981)

Cranky Kong is the original Donkey Kong that appeared in the first Donkey Kong game. In this game, he serves as Mario’s pet gorilla. At the time of the game, Mario went by Jumpman and was a carpenter rather than a plumber. He was also not the kindest of owners, being so bad in fact that his pet gorilla got fed up with being mistreated and lashed out.

This caused him to kidnap Mario’s girlfriend, Pauline, and start throwing barrels down an incomplete building project. Cranky Kong would become the name used for installments where the mantle of “Donkey Kong” had been passed down. In Donkey Kong 64 and the Super Mario Bros. Movie, he serves as the father to the current Donkey Kong. However, in Donkey Kong Country, he is the grandfather to the current Donkey Kong.

1 Donkey Kong

Mario’s Playful Rival Who Comes From A Line Of Kongs

Donkey Kong vs Mario

  • First Appearance:
    Donkey Kong Jr.
    (1982)

After the events of the original Donkey Kong game, Mario has locked up Donkey Kong in a cage, and it is up to Donkey Kong Jr. to save him. In this game, Mario is the villain, and the player controls Donkey Kong Jr. As stated before, developers have used the DK we know as the son of Cranky Kong, but also as the grandson. This has led to wild speculations about what the actual family tree is like.

However, the modern DK has had a long-running antagonistic relationship with the modern-day plumber. Some good modern examples of this are evident in the Mario vs. Donkey Kong games and the Super Mario Bros. Movie. While Donkey Kong in the previously mentioned film outright states this fact, the two of them become proper allies before the end of the movie. Just like Mario, he has a long line of games dedicated to him.

Is There Hope For Humanity In The War Against Skynet?

Published

on

Spread the love

Key Takeaways

  • Terminator Zero delves into the battle between humanity and Skynet with fresh perspectives and characters.
  • Humanity’s hope rests in Kokoro, a complex AI created to counter Skynet’s evolving threat.
  • Despite facing a powerful enemy, humanity’s resilience and adaptability serve as their greatest strengths in the fight. (Characters like Malcolm and Eiko embody this survivalist spirit.)

Netflix’s anime series, Terminator Zero, is an adaptation of the legendary Terminator franchise, and it has reignited the age-old struggle between humanity and Skynet. However, unlike the film, humanity’s hope in the anime does not lie in the birth of a resistance leader post-judgment day.

Through breathtaking animation and compelling characters, the anime dives deep into the horrifying reality of living in a world controlled by a malevolent AI and injects fresh life into the franchise. Even though humanity’s fight against Skynet has been futile, this time, they have a trump card that still gives them a chance as the fight rages on.

Netflix’s long-awaited anime take on the Terminator universe is a breath of fresh air, even as it stumbles in a few key areas.

The Threat Of Skynet

The Challenges Ahead For Humanity

terminator-zero-terminator (2)

In Terminator Zero, Skynet is no longer just a supercomputer controlling an army of machines; it has transcended its original form. Skynet’s motivations go beyond simply annihilating humanity; it seeks to create a world where it is the supreme entity devoid of any organic life. This revelation and fear fueled Malcolm Lee’s invention of Kokoro. In the anime, Kokoro is presented as a highly advanced AI capable of learning, growing, and even experiencing emotions on a level that challenges Skynet’s conception of what it means to be sentient.

Malcolm programmed Kokoro to process human feelings and emotions and to give it the ability to make its own decisions. In other words, Kokoro was humanity’s gamble to escape Skynet’s horror. However, while Skynet comes alive and destroys every other country in the world, Malcolm hopes to save his country, Japan, with Kokoro’s help. The series introduces Skynet as an adaptable entity that evolves with every failed human attack or error. This means every battle lost or won by the Resistance is a lesson learned for Skynet, making it stronger and harder to outmaneuver. Skynet sends its Terminator to the past to eliminate Malcolm and stop him from activating Kokoro. Since Kokoro is humanity’s last hope, it will hinder Skynet’s mission to destroy the whole world and make it its purgatory.

Terminator Zero Review

Netflix’s long-awaited anime take on the Terminator universe is a breath of fresh air, even as it stumbles in a few key areas.

Even in the face of a common enemy, humanity in Terminator Zero is deeply fractured. The post-judgment day Resistance Army Malcom was born is far from a unified front, and they became divided due to the fear the Terminator poses. Skynet’s true power doesn’t just lie in its advanced technology; it’s in how it manipulates human emotions and vulnerabilities. Skynet understands that people are driven by fear, anger, and desperation and uses these emotions to control them. If Malcolm had not resisted his fellow soldiers’ order to stop experimentation on machines, humanity wouldn’t have had a fighting chance. Malcolm even killed his fellow soldiers to travel back in time to 1983 and stop Judgment Day. Also, he refused to open the Kokoro’s chamber door for Kenta, his eldest son, even when the Terminator threatened to kill his son. For Malcolm, the end justifies the means; hence, his aim to build an AI with emotion and activate Kokoro is worth every drop of blood spilled. In this vein, Skynet sows the seeds of doubt and mistrust within humanity, which erodes them to create a united front and fight tooth and nail against Skynet.

Can Humanity Win?

Human Resilience and Adaptation

An ethereal blue figure in Terminator Zero

Skynet, in Terminator Zero, is far more than just a malevolent AI. It has adapted beyond mere machines of war—it is now a global intelligence capable of controlling and manipulating all technology. This presence of Skynet leaves little room for human error, and the human resistance is forced to adapt or die. Characters like Malcolm and Eiko embody the survivalist spirit that gives humanity hope. Malcolm knows that brute force or continuous resistance is not enough to defeat Skynet, hence his desire to build humanity’s own AI even with his subordinates’ disapproval. Eiko has hope for humanity’s survival, because why else does she venture into the past without knowing what awaits her? Despite overwhelming odds, she remains committed to the idea that humans can survive Synet’s planned Doomsday.

Moreover, Kokoro, the AI created by Malcolm, stands as a symbol of what makes humanity different from Skynet. Where Skynet sees humans as expendable and inefficient, Kokoro later understands the emotional depth and complexity that drives human survival through the actions that led to the death of Malcolm. Kokoro’s temporary alliance with humanity at the end of the series gives humanity an edge that Skynet doesn’t expect —empathy. Kokoro’s interactions with Kenta after his father’s death show that while machines like Skynet lack emotional intelligence, she fills in the gap in that area and can connect with people. In this way, this unusual alliance can allow the Resistance to exploit Skynet’s blind spots. However, Kokoro’s alliance with the humans is fragile because she can decide to align with Skynet and destroy humanity. Hence, it is a risky gambit for humanity’s survival.

At the end of the series, the question of whether humanity can win against Skynet is not easily answered, considering the repetitive time loops —time travel is bound to happen. Skynet is a near-unstoppable force, but the series constantly reminds viewers that human resilience and adaptability are their greatest weapons. The series portrays humanity’s resilience through the likes of Malcolm, Eiko, and even his daughter, Reika. Thus, Skynet’s rigidity and the hell-bent desire to annihilate humanity make it predictable. While humanity’s ability to adapt and learn is its greatest asset, it can’t truly overcome the might of Skynet. Hence, humanity has a higher chance with Kokoro, as it is portrayed at the end of the series, but even that is a risky bet as the AI represents a lesser evil.
