Nyan Heroes, an upcoming third-person hero shooter from 9 Lives Interactive, has garnered significant anticipation within the hero-shooter genre since its two-week pre-alpha demo in April. The game features a unique blend of competitive, movement-based gameplay with anthropomorphic feline pilots operating mechanized suits. Strikingly, Nyan Heroes has secured a coveted position among the top five most wish-listed titles on the Epic Games platform. Additionally, recent playtests have also been remarkably successful, propelling the game into the top thirty most-played games on the platform.

GameRant had the opportunity to sit down with Niles Sankey, Design Director, and John Walsh, Development Director of Nyan Heroes, for an in-depth discussion about the indie game’s development process, Pre-Alpha stage, and lore. In this interview, the developers discuss the feedback from playtests, the lore of New Nekovia, and their future plans for the game. This interview has been edited for brevity and clarity.

The Passionate Journey Behind Nyan Heroes’ Development

Nyan Heroes Mechs

Q: Can you tell us a bit about your studio, 9 Lives Interactive?

Walsh: The studio is as unique as our game. We operate fully distributed across the globe without a central office, fostering a fantastic team dynamic. With team members from locations such as India, Europe, and the US, we benefit from a diverse range of experiences and backgrounds that provide us with multiple perspectives and approaches. We’ve been keen to make sure the right people fit into the right roles and focus heavily on internal recommendations.

Since we don’t always operate during regular working hours, there’s trust and there’s fearlessness where we aren’t afraid to make mistakes, and that is one of the great things about this studio. Interestingly, you know you’ve struck gold when the team loves playing the game. Every week, we have a studio-wide play session where team members enthusiastically comment and even engage in friendly trash talk.

Q: Considering you talked about potentially making mistakes, has there been anything particularly memorable during the development of Nyan Heroes, including both challenges and successes?

Walsh: Yes, we had to start from scratch. It was our first attempt at an MMR system, and during our initial launch, we didn’t restrict player numbers on the servers. We’ve encountered unexpected challenges, like managing pings for grouped players. Still, we analyze the data closely to identify areas for improvement. Despite this, we’re pleased that we haven’t experienced any failures. We haven’t had any unavailable servers and player queues have remained short, typically less than a minute and a half. However, we’re committed to continuous improvement because good isn’t enough; there’s always room to improve.

Q: As Nyan Heroes is set to be your studio’s debut title, and considering both of your previous experiences with major studios and significant titles, how has the reception to your game been so far?

Walsh: The response has been overwhelmingly positive! Niles, myself, and many team members have extensive experience with major titles from larger publishers. The grassroots following and player numbers from Nyan Heroes‘ initial early access demo and subsequent playtests have been outstanding. This includes valuable player feedback and positive reactions from streamers. While some games rely on larger corporations to achieve similar numbers, our success has been organic, and we’re incredibly grateful for the support. Truly, reaching the top five most wish-listed games on Epic and entering the top 30 most-played games as a demo has been mind-boggling. This period is crucial, and our fans and players are equally important to us.

Q: Did you set any specific guidelines regarding aspects you wanted to include or avoid in this hero-shooter, such as paying attention to player feedback or rules for one-shot abilities?

Sankey: We’re always mindful of our audience and fans. As our third pre-alpha playtest approaches, everyone is welcome to join us in Discord. Player feedback is incredibly important.

On the design side, the concept of cats piloting mechs is a crucial design pillar for us. We strive to capture their essence and stay true to the world of Nekovia, which is why we’ve implemented mechanics like ejections and cat combat.

Q: Did you conduct additional research on cats and their movement abilities while developing this game?

Walsh: Yes!

Sankey: Absolutely! Our animators thoroughly studied videos of cats, both domestic and large, like lions and cheetahs. Yes, you’re piloting a robot’s mech, but it also feels like an extension of the cat. Since they’re built by cats, they should move like a cat would. This allows players to fully immerse themselves in the power fantasy of harnessing cat-like abilities. This approach extends to classes as well. For instance, the bigger and heavier Atlas class draws strong spiritual inspiration from lions, allowing players to deeply connect with that aspect.

Q: How did 9 Lives Interactive conceive the idea of cats piloting mechs in a team-based shooter?

Sankey: That idea, as far as I’m aware, was born via Max Fu, the Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Nyan Heroes. He loves cats and when I first spoke with him two and a half years ago, he had this core idea already in mind that is very accessible.

Q: The $350K donation from 9 Lives Interactive to support cat rescue missions highlights the impact of video games on real-world issues. Will Nyan Heroes continue to support meaningful causes beyond its initial launch?

Walsh: The projected timeline for supporting cats? Endless. In terms of the launch, we have ambitious plans, but we prefer not to commit to specific dates. We believe the studio will know when the timing is right without unnecessary pressure from arbitrary deadlines. Rest assured, there will be continuous updates; we’re committed to staying transparent, and we won’t disappear or go dark.

Nyan Heroes’ Distinctive Locomotion System and Mechanics

Nyan Heroes Promo Art

Q: How is Nyan Heroes redefining the hero-shooter genre?

Sankey: From a design perspective, I think what we’re doing here is unique. We’re a team-based hero-shooter, but we have a few exceptional features that I don’t think anybody else is implementing. For one, we have an advanced locomotion system that fits our feline vibe very well. We have wall-running, super jumps, and air dashing, all of which can be used in our level designs. Players can use these to find paths and strategically turn the tide of battle, which is a unique aspect of this world.

Additionally, our augment system may be the first of its kind in the hero-shooter genre. When you spawn, you can choose your weapon loadout, but each class also has augment abilities that change the behavior of your weapons. For example, some Medics like Seraph have augments with healing abilities. Depending on the augment you use, it can transform your weapon into a healing tool. For instance, a rocket can be used to heal your teammates. As we introduce new classes, each will have unique augments, expanding your strategic options and enhancing replayability. This should help players find and refine their personal play style.

Lastly, the cat gameplay is quite interesting. When your mech is destroyed in battle, players don’t die; instead, they eject from the mech, and the dynamics shift. While cats aren’t as strong as mechs, they can still assist their team in various ways. This gives players a chance to earn a re-mech and re-engage at full capacity. We are expanding this feature of the game, and while I can’t currently give much information on this, it will offer more unique gameplay for when players can eject from their mechs.

Q: Earlier, you mentioned wall-climbing and wall-running abilities. Does every hero have this ability?

Sankey: Yes, every hero can perform advanced feline locomotion. Once you understand and perfect these mechanics, they apply to all heroes, though each mech and class has its own movement augment ability that works in tandem. Unlike games like Overwatch, where only certain classes or heroes have specific locomotive abilities, in this game, everyone can perform these actions.

Q: Do these locomotive abilities greatly influence your map design process?

Sankey: Yes, it’s been a challenge in a good way to build maps where our locomotion systems have a purpose. You’re not just running up walls for the sake of it. We’ve strategically designed the levels so that players can reach better vantage points and potentially turn a battle in their favor by understanding the map and utilizing their movement abilities.

Q: Aside from augments, what distinguishes Nyan Heroes from other games in the hero-shooter genre?

Walsh: We’re not so much setting ourselves apart, but focusing on what we do and making sure what we do is exceptional. We don’t want to lose track of what makes us fun, what makes our game enjoyable for our users, or get lost in the hullabaloo of competing with others. So what sets us apart? Our players will tell us and, for now, we want to make sure we have an engaging experience waiting.

The Lore of New Nekovia and The Battledome

Nyan Heroes Battleground

Q: Could you tell us about the game’s lore, especially regarding New Nekovia, and how this future came about?

Sankey: In the not so distant future, cats have evolved into intelligent beings. They initially create robotic Guardians, which later rebel against them, forcing the cats to retreat underground. As they regroup and focus on refining their technology, they develop new mechs with a strong determination to reclaim their place. Meanwhile, they engage in competitive battles within the Battledome, a futuristic training facility that also serves as a reminder of the past and a symbol of hope for the future.

Guardian Battles are the most popular sport in New Nekovia, with extravagant competitions and lavish prizes for winning teams. This is the same place where the multi-player sessions take place. These battles are part of their preparation for a future narrative element that we’re not quite ready to reveal yet but are actively developing.

Q: Are there any plans to expand on the narrative through cinematics, short stories, or comics, either now or in the future?

Sankey: The short answer to in-game lore is yes!

Q: How crucial is the narrative of New Nekovia and the battle between the Nyan Heroes and Starlight Corp for understanding the game?

Sankey: If you just want to jump in and team up with your friends, or shoot at your friends, there’s no lower barrier. We hope that the contextualization of world design communicates that lore, but there’s no required reading.

Nyan Heroes Season 3 Pre-Alpha and Ranked Play

Nyan Heroes Gameplay Screen Shot

Q: Is Nyan Heroes designed with a focus on casual players, competitive players, or does it provide equal opportunities for both?

Walsh: Equal opportunity for both. You can’t have a high-end esports game without players aspiring to join the elites. You need to have that onboarding system that allows players to progress.

Q: Are there any additional game modes that your team is working on that you can hint about?

Sankey: Yes, we do have a new game mode coming out. I wish I could say more, but it’s a unique spin on a classic game mode. If you’re familiar with other hero-shooters, you’ll get it immediately, though we are also doing our own thing. We’re playtesting it right now in the studio, and it’s going great! I look forward to fully sharing it with the public.

Sankey: Agreed, we’d really like to cater to both. Personally, I’m a casual player.

Q: Will Nyan Heroes have methods to ensure balanced counterplay against more dominant heroes and metas? For instance, will there be frequent patches to maintain balance?

Walsh: It depends, there’s always the long answer that we will continue balancing the game. Some of this may even come from future concepts like unreleased mechs and augments.

Sankey: The gaps between playtests help us with balancing, and we are looking to fill these when the game becomes more complete. Of course, if we feel there’s a balance issue, we are equipping ourselves to have a frequent cadence of updates to ensure it’s as balanced as possible.

Q: Do the feline characteristics of the characters, which emphasize flexibility and nimbleness, affect how difficult it is to aim in Nyan Heroes?

Sankey: More agile players can be harder to hit. However, the variety of class abilities and weapon options available should greatly assist all players. While we aim to reward agility, we also provide effective engagement options for all player styles.

Q: Is there a timeline players can look to for Season 3 of Pre-Alpha?

Walsh: I can’t say much, but I will say sooner than people think.

Q: Is there anything else you would like to share or mention?

Sankey: The weapon choices are quite interesting. We have different internal names for the guns, but we offer a range of options, including assault-style rifles, plasma rifles, rocket launchers, grenade launchers, shotguns, pistols, and turrets. We’re working on some new weapons as well.

Walsh: For anyone who’s played the game so far, thank you very much for the support! Anyone who’s looking at the game is welcome to download it. We’ll see you in the Battledome, and you can see what all the fuss is about yourselves.

All Starting Village Chests In Yaoling: Mythical Journey

Yaoling: Mythical Journey will task players with many objectives to accomplish. They will need to seek out all the best Yaoling Keepers and best them in battle, they will need to find numerous villagers scattered across the game’s map, and they will need to defeat all of the game’s demon lords.

Before doing any of this, they will be able to interact with many NPCs in the starting village, but scattered around this village are plenty of useful items — including some hidden chests with the best of these items.

After you have chosen your starter Yaoling and fought your first battle, you will gain control of your character. You can move them down to cross a bridge. The moment you cross this bridge, you will be close to two of the hidden chests. You can use the Minimaps in each of the pictures below to help guide you.

The First Hidden Chest – Amber Teardrop

Head to your left and you will see a large building. Move behind this building to increase its transparency, and you will see the chest hidden behind it. Inside this chest will be an Amber Teardrop. This is a truly astonishing item, but one you should definitely hang on to for late in the game when you are grooming your final team of Yaolings. It will let you select a talent from a Yaoling, and allow it to forget that talent.

The Second Hidden Chest – Divine Seal

Head southwest and you will pass two more houses, before coming to a very large one. Heat through the front entrance of this large building and directly ahead of the entrance will be a chest. This chest houses a Divine Seal. Seals are what you will use to capture Yaolings, and a Divine seal can catch any of them without fail. It’s basically a Master Ball in Pokémon terms. You will be able to craft more of these later in the game.

Will guarantee to seal the targeted opponent.

The Third Hidden Chest – Talent Jade #1

Leave the large building and follow the road down to the exit of the village. Head right and you will see a small fenced-off field. You can pick up various items in this field, and then head down to a break in the fence with a chest on the other side. This chest contains some Talent Jade. Talent Jade will let you teach the specified talent to a Yaoling. It is best to keep these for once you are much more familiar with the game and how combat works.

You will find a hole in the fence below. This will put you on the path to the final chest, and another Talent Jade. A lot of games in the monster tamer subgenre feature mechanics such as talents, and they will play a big part in the end game.

Alexandrina Sebastiane (Rina)

Faction: Victoria Housekeeping

Zenless Zone Zero- Alexandrina Sebastiane

  • Rank: S – Rank
  • Attribute: Electric
  • Style: Support

Rina is the head maid of Victoria Housekeeping and the one the rest of the faction reports to on the daily. Her demeanor is similar to that of a noble from an aristocratic family, and she is rather graceful in her movements. Thus, it is very important to her how she presents herself to other people.

She is often accompanied by two of her most precious Bangboo whilst indulging in her hobby of cooking. As Rina’s family holds the most influence in the company, most of its members have either served as attendants or maids to prominent figures in New Eridu.

Anby Demara

Faction: Cunning Hares

Zenless Zone Zero- Anby Demara

  • Rank: A – Rank
  • Attribute: Electric
  • Style: Stun

As one of the original members of Cunning Hares, Anby is the most mysterious of them all, since her identity has never existed until after joining the Cunning Hares. Her background is pretty secretive and not much is known about her origins. Anby also does lack common sense when it comes to certain situations, and she has quite a quirky personality in various situations.

Despite this, she is extremely skilled in combat and one of the strongest in her faction. Her behavior and performance suggest that she has had military training, and if players have watched the Soldier 11 trailer, they will have noticed Anby in the background guiding her. This proposes the two of them have some kind of unconfirmed connection which can also tie in to how Nicole found Anby lost near some ruins.

Anton Ivanov

Faction: Belobog Heavy Industries

Zenless Zone Zero- Anton Ivanov

  • Rank: A – Rank
  • Attribute: Electric
  • Style: Attack

Anton has been around at Belobog Heavy Industries since the former president’s reign. Handpicked by Khors for his sincerity and genuine personality, Anton is the figurehead for boosting morale among his coworkers.

Aside from this, he too has his quirks, like every other ZZZ character. He has been seen talking affectionately to his jackhammer and often calls it his “Bro”. He treats his jackhammer like one would treat a friend or human, often asking it questions and replying to it. Some would say he borders the line between crazy and others would say he’s just imaginative.

Ben Bigger

Faction: Belobog Heavy Industries

Zenless Zone Zero- Ben Bigger

  • Rank: A – Rank
  • Attribute: Fire
  • Style: Defense

As the financial director behind Belobog Heavy Industries, Ben is one of the oldest members. He’s a humanoid bear who looks terrifying on the outside, but surprisingly, the most caring member around.

Zenless Zone Zero: Factions, Explained (Full List & Roles)

There are currently eight factions in Zenless Zone Zero. Here’s an overview of what they do and what their members are capable of.

Much like Anby, not much is known about Ben’s background and where he came from. Since the game incorporates characters with hybrid features, Ben is not the only one with secrets.

Billy Kid

Faction: Cunning Hares

Zenless Zone Zero- Billy Kid

  • Rank: A – Rank
  • Attribute: Physical
  • Style: Attack

Billy is a member of Cunning Hares and a machine that is self-aware. He has been fitted with an AI construct, but most of his personal background has been omitted. The only other information available is that before joining the Cunning Hares, he worked for another mysterious gang.

Despite his exceptional learning skills and combat abilities, Billy is childlike at heart and quite naive when it comes to certain things.

Corin Wickes

Faction: Victoria Housekeeping

Zenless Zone Zero- Corin Wickes

  • Rank: A – Rank
  • Attribute: Physical
  • Style: Attack

A highly obedient maid who lacks confidence, Corin’s main personality trait is her fear of being disliked. She’s overly apologetic when she’s either in a rush or messing up somewhere. Despite her anxious nature, she’s one of the most dedicated workers of the Victoria Housekeeping faction.

She completes each project with the utmost sincerity, even though she never feels she has done a good job. This anxiety and stress could potentially be tied to her childhood or background, where evidence has been found that she once had a serious illness and had to undergo surgery to rectify it.

Ellen Joe

Faction: Victoria Housekeeping

Zenless Zone Zero- Ellen Joe

  • Rank: S – Rank
  • Attribute: Ice
  • Style: Attack

Another maid working for Victoria Housekeeping, Ellen, is one of their newest members. As a student, Ellen has a responsibility to balance her school and work life. It’s because of this that she prefers to engage in activities that require less energy.

Since Ellen is a shark girl, with her lineage comes formidable powers – much of which requires a lot of energy. Thus, when required to use her powers, she often carries a lollipop around to help regulate her sugar intake.

Grace Howard

Faction: Belobog Heavy Industries

Zenless Zone Zero- Grace Howard

  • Rank: S – Rank
  • Attribute: Electric
  • Style: Anomaly

The main brains behind Belobog Heavy Industries and the talent behind all of Belobog’s in-Hollow machinery, Grace is the one who creates all of their sentient machinery. She’s a massive mechanical geek and often never stops trying to tweak or adjust her inventions.

Zenless Zone Zero: Character Tier List

Here’s how every Agent in Zenless Zone Zero fares when compared to each other in their ZZZ character tier list.

Her background calls for a sad story since she lost her parents to the Hollow when she was younger. She was then adopted by her parents’ friend – Khors, who is also Koleda’s father, making the two of them “sisters”.

Koleda Belobog

Faction: Belobog Heavy Industries

Zenless Zone Zero- Koleda Belobog

  • Rank: S – Rank
  • Attribute: Fire
  • Style: Stun

Despite her age, Koleda is known for being the fearsome President of Belobog Heavy Industries. After the disappearance of her father, she had to take up the position and fill in all the gaps to make sure the company didn’t shut down. She’s probably the most successful leader the company has had since she’s had to bring it back from the brink of financial destruction due to her father’s poor choices.

However, although Koleda puts on this brave front of a fearless leader, she is at the end of the day still a child. She loves sweets, playing around, and just goofing off when she doesn’t have responsibilities. When players reach certain Trust rank levels of hers, they’ll learn more about what she does on her days off.

Luciana de Montefio (Lucy)

Faction: Sons of Calydon

Zenless Zone Zero- Luciana de Montefio

  • Rank: A – Rank
  • Attribute: Fire
  • Style: Support

A fiery cracker from the Sons of Calydon, Lucy’s speech is completely different from her manner. She seems to be from a wealthy family as she speaks in a very formal tone, yet she can be quite rambunctious.

As the Sons of Calydon are a faction that exists outside of New Eridu, not much is yet known of their members, but there has been evidence that Lucy might have run away from her family.

Nekomiya Mana (Nekomata)

Faction: Cunning Hares

Zenless Zone Zero- Nekomata

  • Rank: S – Rank
  • Attribute: Physical
  • Style: Attack

More commonly referred to as Nekomata, she’s a cat – Thiren, who just recently joined the Cunning Hares. Since she’s of a cat species, much like the animal, she’s extremely mischievous and loves to pull pranks. Before joining the Cunning Hares, she was part of the Red Fang Gang and had a familial bond with its leader.

After parting ways with the gang, she decided to strike out on her own, and that eventually led her to Nicole. Nekomata does have a slight obsession with Nicole, but there is no definite reason as to why.

Nicole Demara

Faction: Cunning Hares

Zenless Zone Zero- Nicole Demara

  • Rank: A -Rank
  • Attribute: Ether
  • Style: Support

Nicole is the leader of the “odd-job” agency, Cunning Hares, and the reason behind its name. Since she grew up in the streets, she’s been known for her cunning personality and wily ways of outsmarting people.

Zenless Zone Zero: Best Support Characters

In Zenless Zone Zero, support characters have different benefits to the team, however some are more useful than others.

Her background is pretty jaded, as she’s been an orphan bouncing around families her entire life. When she did finally get adopted, she ran away from them and lived on the streets of New Eridu until she founded the Gentle House agency.

Piper Wheel

Faction: Sons of Calydon

Zenless Zone Zero- Piper Wheel

  • Rank: A – Rank
  • Attribute: Physical
  • Style: Anomaly

Just like her last name, Piper is the Sons of Calydon’s main driver. She’s a car freak and enjoys taking risks on the road. She also seems to have the mentality of an elderly person as she always refers to her faction members as ‘youngsters’.

Not much has yet been collected on Piper, so once trust ranks have been unlocked for her, only then can players find out.

Soldier 11

Faction: Obol Squad

Zenless Zone Zero- Soldier 11

  • Rank: S – Rank
  • Attribute: Fire
  • Style: Attack

Soldier 11’s background is the most shrouded in the game as most of her information has been redacted. There has been no reason as to why, but it could be related to her connection to Anby as seen in her character trailer.

Soldier 11 is actually a codename and no one knows her real name as yet. There is a chance that at one point in time, Anby trained Soldier 11 before going missing and joining the Cunning Hares. Soldier 11 seems to have lingering resentment for her name because of this and thus chose to go by a ‘number’.

Soukaku

Faction: Section 6

Zenless Zone Zero- Soukaku

  • Rank: A – Rank
  • Attribute: Ice
  • Style: Support

Soukaku is the youngest member of Section 6 and quite the glutton when it comes to food. Perhaps it’s because of her demonic nature, but she loves food and wastes no time gulping it down when given the opportunity.

On top of that, it’s also the source of her immense power, giving her the ability to wield a heavy sword. Despite working for one of the most taxing faction divisions in New Eridu, Soukaku is rather uneducated due to her upbringing. This has led her to be a little too naive and easily fooled by a lot of things.

Von Lycaon

Faction: Victoria Housekeeping

Zenless Zone Zero- Von Lycaon

  • Rank: S – Rank
  • Attribute: Ice
  • Style: Stun

Lycaon is the backbone of Victoria Housekeeping and the reason for its reliable reputation that it has garnered. He’s in charge of all the members and often expects them to act like ladies should. This is because he’s the ultimate gentleman who goes above and beyond to be the most reliable option for his customers.

A quirk that Lycaon has is his obsession with cleanliness and elegance. Ironically though, his canine instincts tend to shine through when he is particularly happy about something, with his tail and ear wagging. Like most of the characters, Lycaon’s background is pretty shady as he seems to have led a more wild lifestyle in the past.

Zhu Yuan

Faction: Criminal Investigation Special Response Team

Zenless Zone Zero- Zhu Yuan

  • Rank: S – Rank
  • Attribute: Ether
  • Style: Attack

Zhu Yuan is a highly skilled police officer at the Public Security division and is even considered in the running to be the next Commissioner. She’s a model citizen and employee who does her best in all aspects of her day-to-day life.

Zhu Yuan is actually the type to never leave any case unresolved, which makes her track record in the division one of the best. It is with her unparalleled detective skills that she has managed to acquire her leadership position.
